Alternative Style Secerts

Inexpensiveness Style Secrets & Favorite Finds - From our Beauty & Fashion Director/Editor.

I have been an purse and shoe obsessed woman for years, but with the effects of the recession I have had to make some changes to my spending habits. Keep my shopping down to a minimum while looking for more bargains.

I'm not saying the items I purchase have to be cheap just with the quality to make me want to purchase. Here are a few ideas on how you can save some money.
This blog has other post on this idea of saving. Feel free to add your money saving tips
on shopping either fashion or beauty.

TIED ON ONE: When did adding a scarf to you pants become something new?
I have recently read a few articles that mentioned this very thing. Using a long scarf on your jeans thru your belt loop. I guess it just hadn't hit the high end fashion world yet like the rest of us, because this is nothing new. My friends and I have been doing this for many years.
We use to also wear a long pearl and metal necklace around our waist or thru our jeans.
So if you would like to update your wardrobe use a colorful patterned scarf by twisting it through the belt loops. You may even use a piece of jewelry like a pearl necklace instead, but a long scarf sash will become one of the most used items in your wardrobe.

Do you own a tunic? If do, which is very popular right now, you may knot the scarf at the waist and it wear over your tunic. Whether you use it to accent a hat or a purse, tie it around your waist, wear it like a belt, or use it as a bag options are indeed almost endless.

I personally use a silk taupe scarf on my similar matching taupe and dark brown color Fendi purse. Need a new purse? If your scarf is long enough you may use it as a purse. Just don't add to many items because it may not be sturdy enough to handle the weight. Plus the bulk and bulging is unattractive. Remember Breakfast at Tiffany's or even Audrey Hepburn? She use to wear it around her hat and Audry used it sometimes on her bag.

Using a scarf as a head band, Rhoda does any one remember that character? From the Mary Tyler Moore show, and later had her own show a spin off named Rhoda in 1974. Rhoda Morgenstern during her Ronda show use to dress like a hippie (the gypsy like look). Her character use to wear a scarf around her head. So yes since at least 2009 if not earlier square scarves have become popular again.

So whether you are buying a cheap scarf, already own one, or using a designer brand like a Hermes scarf you can update your look instantly and use it for coordination!

A SWITCH HITTER:
While looking for a deal you can image my joy with my love of shoes to have discovered Switch Flops. They are these amazing flat shoes that can change their look with a flip of a switch lol.
How? The emblem/ snap-ons can be swapped for each pair of shoes you owe by Switch a flip, and come in 12 different styles. The price is about $62 a pair with one emblem/ snap-on is $10 per so it's like a whole new shoe collection. I would be more amazed if you could wear it with any another shoe you already own, but then it would not be in the companies best interest.

Three Layer Dark Chocolate Coffee Cake

Recipe Yield 3 - 9 inch round pans

This is a common easy to m
ake 3 layer chocolate coffee cake. Have some fun and change the recipe around. You can add most any substitute. I added a few different suggesting to this cake such as use coffee or juice instead of water.

If you have an ideas you care to share your us please add your comment. Note thought if any comment is spamming ( "here's my recipe for my cake" with a link takes you to a store to purchase cake or any place that sells cake or baking supplies then that's my definition of spam) Only links to food site your a member of would not be spam.

So spam or ugly comments will be
deleted but not removed because comments must be approved first before they are visible to the public. Thanks

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of Fresh-brewed coffee
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter-flavored Crisco
  • 2 1/4 cups white sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease 3 - 9 inch round cake pans. In medium bowl, pour boiling water over cocoa, and whisk until smooth. Let mixture cool. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at time, then stir in vanilla. Add the flour mixture alternately with the cocoa mixture. Spread batter evenly between the 3 prepared pans.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Allow to cool.
Separated the eggs and whipped the whites separately with some of the sugar, then folded it all together to make is extra airy. This recipe could easily be flavored with water, juice or buttermilk in place of the coffee. Caution: grease the pan quite well, as the cake is clingy and tear when hot. This recipe makes a moderately dense cake.

Dryness: make sure the cocoa-boiling water mixture has cooled thoroughly before proceeding with the recipe otherwise the cake may turn out heavy and dry. Note the texture can also be moist or dry depending on how long you bake it and how long you let it air-dry. Technical issue. Insufficient creaming of the butter and sugar could cause the cake to be dry. I allow at least 2 minutes of moderate-speed blending.

Remember is using butter-flavored Crisco instead of oil or butter (1c butter = 1c Crisco). If you want a more moisture cake you may use 6t water or milk, which can also make it moister. You could also be overbaking, either by giving it too much time in the oven or by having an oven that's too hot. Remember each oven is different and your setting for 350 may not be the same as mine. If you enjoy baking and are a beginner, do yourself a favor and invest in an oven inexpensive thermometer. I bet you will not regret!

Glaze (frosting) :

* 5½ ounces semisweet chocolate, roughly chopped
* ½ cup heavy cream
* 1 tablespoon coffee-flavored or espresso liqueur
* 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
* Whole coffee beans for garnish

If you would like to add vanilla whipped cream on top, cherry, fruit, carrots, slice almonds or anything else you can thing. Filling was a chocolate mousse filling. You can substitute glaze with just plain chocolate or use butter cream frosting and coffee chocolate flavored shavings as toppings to the cake. FANTASTIC! Enjoy

Next week I have a Microwave Chocolate cake.

Winter Wonderland

Here are a few pictures I took with my one shot camera. I hope you enjoy. I have some cute pictures of my dog but not all of them are in this photo.

I will later this month post pictures of my birthday cake I made for myself, christmas this year and by dog in a Halloween custom. See his is an unique size so most doggie outfits don't fit. No pun intended. I use his image (made into a painting first) for my dog care line labels @ thatgirlsbathandbody.com .

These are pictures I took of the snow fall earlier this year. I had not had a chance yet to upload. For larger image go to my flickr page. It may be a few weeks before I upload all the new fall and winter pictures.

Hope you have enjoyed reading. Deb

  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 1 (3.5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 (9 inch) pie crust, baked

  2. Line bottom of pie crust with one banana, sliced. Fill pie shell with filling until level with top, using about half of the prepared filling. Top with slices of second banana. Banana Cream Pie

This banana cream pie recipe makes 1 pie. I decided to make a banana cream pie a few months ago and finally got the chance to post this blog. My picture is featured above.

Now I know many recipes on the net are made with vanilla or banana flavored pudding mix. Used alone or along with real bananas and artificial ingredients. Some add nuts, other fruit toppings or even baked Alaskan style.

If you would like you can use pudding mix in place of one of the ingredients or add. I hope you enjoy and leave you comments. Many types of banana pies. Here's just one of my original recipes.

  • 1 - 9 inch pie crust, baked
  • 3 medium Bananas
  • Homemade sweetened condensed milk or 1 can
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract and lemon juice
  • 1 8oz package of cream cheese
If you would like to add sugar to make it more sweet that is fine. Just remember that the you may want to use unsweetened condensed milk instead. This recipe is semi-homemade. You can of course make it more handmade by changing the ingredients around or quicker buy a pre-made crust. I made my banana pie with mostly handmade (by myself) and made the crust and whip cream myself.

If I was making this pie for anyone other than my family or selling the pie I would wear protective gloves even though I have freshly clean hands. Why am I using a baked crust? A baked crust is crispier, however chilled crusts are quicker to make.

Instructions : Bake pie shell. Slice two of the bananas; arrange in pie shell. Beat cream cheese in pie shell. Beat cream cheese in small bowl on medium speed until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in milk until well blended. Beat in lemon juice and vanilla. Pour into pie shell. Refrigerate for 2 hours. Slice the remaining banana; arrange on pie and top with homemade whipped cream.
Garnished the top with remaining bananas, or add a cherry, almonds, crumble crust on top and whipped cream. Whip cream can be added on the side or just around the edges.

Optional you can replace certain above ingredients above with list below

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups cold milk replace condense milk
  • 2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix replace cream cheese
  • 2 cups frozen whipped topping, thawed replace homemade whip cream.
  • Strawberries or nuts replace banana topping.

Directions

  1. Slice 2 of the bananas and arrange in bottom of baked and cooled pastry shell.
  2. Pour cold milk into a medium bowl. Add pudding mix and whisk until thoroughly combined. Fold in 1/2 cup of the whipped topping. Pour into pastry shell.
  3. Chill at least 3 hours before serving. Garnish with remaining whipped topping and slices of the remaining banana.

I haven't posted some baking photos in a while so here I go. This first one above is my birthday cake I made for myself. Don't worry about it I didn't mind a bit making my own cake instead of someone else or even store bought. I thoroughly enjoy baking and cooking daily. I just haven't recently had the time to post all of these lovely photos of the cakes and pies I have baked and taking pictures of.

Next my mothers b-day cake. Note: this photos are my property there by owned by me. No one is allowed to use these images without my written consistent. Valentine Cupcakes Part 1

Just took these yummy homemade cupcakes out of the oven. Next I will let them cool and finish off with sweet butter cream or vanilla icing. The baking directions below are not the exact recipe I used, but I thought this one would be a lot quicker and simpler. Since I tend to make all mine homemade from scratch. With all the moms with busy hectic lives I thought you may want to give this recipe a try.

I can't remember where I got this recipe but I believe it was on the back of a cake mix box. So it is not completely original thought I added a few of my own ideas to better suit the taste of my readers as well as myself.

Here's a picture of my cupcakes. Decorated in with homemade pink and white icing. I made mine out of cake flour. You can substitute with angle food mix or vanilla cake mix if you plan on adding fruit toppings. Now all of these cupcake I made and took pictures of was made from scratch and not a pre-mixed base.

My cupcakes are moist and delicious everyone loves my cupcakes, pies, cakes and chocolate turtles. I will have to add my turtles candy, valentine cookies and muffins at a later date. So please continue to read so you don't miss a thing.

A low fat version quicker and simpler version my cupcakes can be made with pre-box Angel Food Cake Mix. All you should need is water or/and milk. This can make up to 30 cupcakes.

Ingredients

  • 1 Package of angel food cake mix or vanilla
  • 2 tsp of almond extract (optional)
  • strawberries
  • butter cream or chocolate frosting
  • 1 1/4 cups cold water (or substitute half with milk)
  • Whip Cream (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven 350 to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Depending on your oven settings.
  2. Line a 12 cup muffin tin with paper bake cups.
  3. Prepare batter as directed on the box.
  4. Fill muffin cups 3/4 or 2/3 full.
  5. Bake for 14 to 20 minutes, or until tops are golden brown. (each oven may vary).

This was so easy to make and fast. They are great with strawberries, vanilla, butter cream or chocolate frosting. When adding 2 tsp of almond extract add to the batter and topped with just a little vanilla icing when cooled.

I filled the cups 3/4 full and they came out fine. Be careful to not let the cupcakes to overflow so you can use less. Keep the batter refrigerated between baking. I baked for about 14 minutes until the tops were golden. You may want to watch them the first time you make the cupcakes as each oven temperature varies in time. It made about 30 good sized cup cakes for me. I frosted with homemade whip cream but you can use cool whip. You may add sliced strawberry's on top.

A lot of variations can be made with this recipe - Use could add mandarin orange segments and substitute half the water for the liquid in the can. You could add many extracts and food coloring to create a tie-dye effect. Perhaps add sprinkles, homemade frosting and sugar glazed strawberries.

I know I have been posting mostly (a lot) of food post as of lately. I will add more fashion, makeup tips and jewelry (how to make) techniques soon. Don't miss some personal pictures of my dog, mom and me soon.

Use a very large bowl because the mix expands like crazy. Give the mix some time to settle before putting it into the baking cups (otherwise you will get some with too much air and they come out looking like a deflated souffle). Angel food cupcakes tend to be rather delicate compare to using regular cake mix when coming out of the pan.

Serving: Makes about 2 to 3 dozen. I put whipped cream only on mine. Everyone loved them.

All images used are mine and mine alone. My cupcakes make about 20.

Beauty Tips for Fair Skin Green Eye Beauties

From my Mypace Blog and Wordpress Blog- January 20, 2009 - Tuesday

Beauty Tips For the Fair Skin and Green Eyed.

Category: Fashion, Style, Shopping
Color tones = blue undertone.

Makeup Beauty Tips: Look for a silver cool tone to your whites. So silver tones (cool) or off white like a cream.
How can you make your lips hot in night club lighting?

Lips: Stay away from mattes (popular this season), pastels and light natural colors. Unless you plan on playup only your eyes. Don’t use very dark lipstick and instead try a sheer but bright color in the mauve, fuchsia, or berry family.

When used in a sheer gloss or lipstick with clear gloss it plays up your lips. The light hits your lips creating a noticeable yet beautiful affect without looking vamp. Look for sheer on the color label to ensure it is not full coverage. Colors that are too light or matte makes you look ghostly because of the lighting. Stay away from frost too in night club lighting unless your going for the gothic dead look. Make sure to use color that is glossy or add gloss. The gloss reflecting light is just as important as the color.

Green Eyes look best (contrast) in many different shades of purples and pinks. Why because of the contrast in the colors. It is the opposite in the color chart spectrum from green. It will make your baby greens more noticeable. Not that you can not use grays, certain greens or dark browns for a smoky eye effect. This is from one of my beauty blogs. I hope this simple info was helpful.

I will provide you with another blog about club makeup tips. So you look your most beautiful in club lightning. Remember photos taken with bright camera lighting and the type of lightly in clubs can make some people look ghostly or make dark circles more noticeable. I have know some women who don't have any but the lighting with makeup cast the nasty glow.

Look your most beauty every day and remember as always 'skin is in'. That Girls trys to provide makeup advice for women of all races and sizes. We welcome suggestions :) .

If anyone has an suggesting on makeup for darker complexion women please share on the comment box. Thanks - Dee (Deb)

NEW Great Product Review - thatgirlsbathandbody.com's MySpace Blog

NEW Great Product Review: That Girls Bath and Body. We just got our non-paid product review from Craft Gossip!!! Please read this snippet here.

"I recently had the pleasure of using several products from That Girl’s Bath and Body, a small family-owned business featuring natural homemade bath and body products. That Girl’s products are a unique bath and body care line. The Night Cream is fantastic! I raved about it so much that my husband had to get in on the action & begin using it, as well"...

About the night cream (from the owner) I have customers with oily skin, very dry skin, eczema, sensitive skin or allergic, you name it and they all use this unscented face cream. It is very concentrated so it last along time. No harmful ingredients, no colorant, no parabens, just pure goodness in a jar. Currently sales in a 1.7 oz pump or 2oz jar. Our repair night cream contains Borage Oil, Shea, Rose Hip oil, Vitamin E and much more!

AHA Facial Tonic with Organic Multiple Fruit Acids Blend and Essential Oils - 98 Percent Organic, Paraben Free - Unscented

AHA Facial Clarifying Mist with Organic Multiple Fruit Acids Blend and Essential Oils - 98 Percent Organic, Paraben Free ~ pH 4.3.

Brighten your complexion while you remove dead skin cells, makeup, dirt and excess oil! This Alpha Hydroxy Organic & Vegan Clarifying Mist will leave your skin looking bright and refreshed. ~ Free of Parabens, Dye, Alcohol.

This Organic Vegan AHA Clarifying Toner is clear and lightly scented from the organic fruit extracts it contains. Although this AHA Clarifying Toner is very gentle, it is NOT for sensitive skin types.

Any skin care line is not complete without either a toner or astringent as part of the skin care regime you recommend. It is a critical step that is often over looked.
Do not forget to purchase our Facial Gel Cleanser and Night Cream.

The Organic Multiple Fruit Acids in this refreshing toner contains naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acids (AHA). The AHA’s are water soluble components of the Multiple Fruits which maximize the stimulation of cell renewal while minimizing irritation associated with the use of topical alpha hydroxy acids.

Stimulate new cell growth, resulting in a fresher, healthier complexion and reduced pore size
.

Citrus Fruits are a great source of natural vitamins and are rich in Vitamin C, which is also a natural bleaching agent. Lemon is considered as one of the most beneficial for treating facial dark spots, especially for freckles and age spots.

Lemon juice is a
naturally occurring acidic peel that will help bring replenished skin cells to the surface.

In helping dispose of dead skin, lemon juice helps protect against a primary cause of acne. Some even report improvement in the severity of their acne scars.

The
exfoliating effect which lemon juice provides, as well as its skin tightening properties, helps make acne scars less noticeable.

Most Skin Types: Oily, Problem Skin such as Eczema, Acneic, Mature, Dry, Sun damaged, Normal and Combination skins. ~ pH 4.3.

Find this clarifying toner and my others skincare line at ThatGirl.ArtFire.com or ThatGirlsBathandBody.com ! You will be pleased with That Girl's Bath & Body products and their finally result.

Eye Tricks

Here are a few basic eye makeup tips.

To stop raccoon eyes, sweep a little translucent powder under your eyes. To brighten tired eyes, apply white eye pencil to bottom lids.

Tweeze brows right after a shower OR put a warm washcloth on them before plucking.

Keep darker colors on lids.

Eyeliner Rules:
bright eyes= white, pink or yellow liner
red eyes= blue liner
sultry look= black liner

Line top of lids with black liner. Then take a lighter shade and line over the black BUT only from center to outer corner. 9.16.08
